Staff report

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Jarquis Eugene Davis, 24, and Trevez Ravell McRae, 26, were arrested early this morning with an automatic weapon after allegedly fleeing a traffic stop. Davis, who is on drug offender probation, also allegedly had over 24 grams of marijuana in his pocket.

At about 4 a.m. in the 800 block of W. University Avenue, a Gainesville Police Department (GPD) Officer attempted a traffic stop on a vehicle driven by McRae for running a stop sign. The vehicle reportedly refused to stop and fled at high speeds, so the officer did not pursue the vehicle in the interest of public safety.

An alert was sent out to local agencies, and an Alachua County Sheriff’s Deputy located the vehicle in the 2100 block of SW 70th Terrace, the address on the vehicle’s registration. Davis and McRae were reportedly both in the vehicle, and both were detained on the basis of fleeing and eluding law enforcement.

The arrest report notes that both suspects smelled like burnt marijuana, so the vehicle and suspects were searched.

Davis reportedly had 24.4 grams of marijuana in the pocket of his hoodie, and two loaded firearms were reportedly found in the glove box of the vehicle. One of the guns was a 9 mm Glock 45 with a “switch” installed that converts it to automatic fire. The other gun was a .45 Springfield XD45 handgun.

Post Miranda, Davis reportedly said the marijuana was his. He said it was medical marijuana but reportedly acknowledged that he should not have carried it in a sandwich bag. He also reportedly said he had smoked a “blunt” before getting in the vehicle.

Post Miranda, McRae reportedly admitted that he had been driving the vehicle and acknowledged that his decision to flee was “impulsive.” McRae reportedly denied ownership of the guns.

Davis has been charged with possession of a controlled substance, possession of a machine gun, and violation of probation. He has one felony conviction and two misdemeanor convictions (adjudication of guilt was withheld on all three charges). In February 2024, Davis entered a plea of nolo contendere to possession of marijuana with intent to sell and resisting an officer without violence, but Judge David Kreider only sentenced him on the marijuana distribution charge, withholding adjudication of guilt and sentencing him to 24 months of drug offender probation; the charge of resisting an officer was dropped. He is not permitted to possess drugs or firearms as a condition of his probation. Bail will be set tomorrow.

McRae has been charged with fleeing/eluding, possession of a machine gun, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He has one felony conviction out of Levy County and two misdemeanor convictions in Alachua County. He has served one state prison sentence and was released in 2019. Bail will be set tomorrow.

Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
