Quarry photo from Alachua County Sheriff’s Office video (link below)

Staff report

NEWBERRY, Fla. – Jordan Joseph Cain, 27, was arrested yesterday after he was found swimming in a quarry off CR 235 in Newberry; he was charged with fleeing with lights and sirens active, petit theft of a license plate, and resisting an officer without violence, and additional charges are reportedly pending.

The incident began when law enforcement officers learned that a GPS tracking device on a motorcycle stolen from Gainesville showed that it was in the 22200 block of NW 22nd Avenue, off CR 235.

An Alachua County Sheriff’s Deputy interviewed the occupants of the residence where the stolen motorcycle was found, and they all said they didn’t know anything about the stolen motorcycle; however, they said Cain had borrowed a car from one of the occupants, and they provided a description of the car.

Deputies also learned that Cain had an active warrant out of Leon County for violation of probation on charges on possession of a weapon by a convicted felon and fleeing.

A deputy waited in the area until Cain turned onto NW 22nd Avenue from CR235 at about 3:40 p.m. and attempted a traffic stop. The vehicle reportedly did not stop but turned into a residence on NW 22nd Avenue, drove through a fence, and then drove into a wooded area. The deputy reported that she did not pursue the vehicle into the wooded area.

The tag on the vehicle was found to have been stolen in Gainesville, and deputies reportedly recovered three firearms from the scene.

After more units arrived, deputies followed the tracks of the vehicle in the dry grass, and K-9 teams tracked the area north of the vehicle. After some time, a deputy on the perimeter saw a person swimming in a nearby quarry. Deputies gave multiple commands to the man, who was later identified as Cain, to come out of the quarry, and he was eventually taken into custody.

A video from the quarry can be viewed here.

Cain has 11 felony convictions (none violent) and five misdemeanor convictions (none violent). He has served two state prison sentences, with his most recent release in January 2024. He is currently on probation. Judge Kristine Van Vorst set bail at $65,000.

Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
