Staff report

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Makhai Norad Carter, 18, was arrested last night in Majestic Oaks and charged with grand theft of a motor vehicle, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, and resisting an officer without violence.

At about 7:26 p.m. last night, an Alachua County Sheriff’s Deputy reportedly found Carter in the driver’s seat of a stolen car in the parking lot of Majestic Oaks Apartments (5800 SW 20th Avenue). The car belongs to a Tennessee resident and had been reported stolen in Gainesville on July 18. The deputy reported that the car was running and Carter was the operator of the car.

A high-risk traffic stop was conducted, and Carter got out of the car but allegedly refused multiple commands to walk back to the deputy; instead, he allegedly slowly moved away from the deputy. He was eventually handcuffed after the deputy used a taser.

A search of the vehicle reportedly produced a handgun on the front passenger floorboard, in an area where the deputy reported Carter had made furtive movements while refusing to put his hands up.

Carter’s juvenile criminal history is unavailable at this time; he has no adult criminal history. Judge David Kreider set bail at $45,000.

Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
