Who Was Reyes Moronta?
Born on January 6, 1993, Reyes Armando Moronta passed away on July 28, 2024.
He was a Dominican professional baseball pitcher. He was an MLB player with the Los Angeles Dodgers, Arizona Diamondbacks, Los Angeles Giants, and Los Angeles Angels. As an international free agent, Moronta joined the Giants in 2010 and participated in Major League Baseball from 2017 to 2023. He lost his life in a car crash in the Dominican Republic on July 28, 2024.
The youngest of five children, he was born in Santiago, Dominican Republic, to Francisco and Ivonne Moronta.
His mother rolled cigars at a local factory, while his father drove a truck. He was raised in Quinigua, a village of 700 people located five miles (8.0 km) north of Santiago.
He went to Milagros Hernández Lyceum in Villa González for his high school education.
Moronta signed a contract with the Mexican League’s Bravos de León on May 9, 2024. He labored to an 8.69 ERA in 19+2⁄3 innings thrown, with 24 strikeouts and 4 saves in his 19 Bravos outings. León released Moronta on July 25.
He began playing in Major League Baseball (MLB) on September 5, 2017, with the San Francisco Giants, and he played his final MLB game on May 24, 2023, with the Los Angeles Angels.
