2-year-old sitting in urine at Kansas day care allegedly told to clean it up himself

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – Allegations against a Wichita daycare include a child sitting in urine and being told to clean it up himself.

KSN’s Derek Lytle talked to a concerned parent who posted the allegation on social media. The post led to others contacting him with their own allegations against the day care. The owner of Honey Tree and Branches Academy denies all claims.

Jeff McAnarney said he received a disturbing message from the owner of Honey Tree and Branches Academy, an independent, private preparatory school and day care for children through eighth grade.

“Leaving him unsupervised in the bathroom, saying that he was lying in a pool of his own urine and that they were going to make him clean it up,” said McAnarney.

He said his wife filed complaints with the Department of Children and Families, detailing what happened to their son, Booker.

McAnarney took to social media to post about the incident when he received dozens of messages from parents and past employees about the issues they claim they’ve had with the day care.

“It’s gut-wrenching, and I will tell you that the messages I received from other mothers, Booker had it kind of easy compared to some of the others,” said McAnarney.

Ashley and Logan Meyer saw the post and said they’ve had bad experiences at Honey Tree and Branches Academy with their two daughters as well, eventually moving them elsewhere.

“We’ve got friends; we’ve got past employees we hang out with all the time, and it’s still a hot topic of, Oh my goodness, this is what happened this week; this is how my child’s day-to-day care is going right now,” said Ashley.

Kimberly Fielding, owner of Honey Tree and Branches Academy, said these claims are blown out of proportion and inaccurate.

“When you have allegations like that, is that something that you’re saying is completely false?” KSN’s Derek Lytle asked Fielding.

“Your first question, the child not being assisted and sitting in urine for a long period of time, is absolutely false,” said Fielding in response.

When asked about prior investigations from the state and current ones that may be open, Fielding said they have never proven negligence.

“That complaint would always have to be investigated and cleared; we’ve never had substantiated complaints against us ever,” said Fielding.

The parents told KSN they have filed complaints with DCF.

KSN also reached out to the Kansas Department of Health and Environment to ask about any recent complaints filed against the day care. We have not yet heard back.
