Staff report

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Gregory Tyrone Hill, Jr., 34, was arrested late last night and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and child abuse without great bodily harm after allegedly shooting through the floor of an upstairs bedroom of his apartment while other people were in the apartment.

At about 11:40 p.m. on September 24, a Gainesville Police Department officer responded to Cobblestone Apartments, where Hill was living with his girlfriend, an eight-year-old child, and a woman who is related to his girlfriend.

The responding officer reported that when Hill arrived home from work, he went into the upstairs bedroom he shares with his girlfriend and the child, who were in separate beds. Hill reportedly argued with his girlfriend and then allegedly reached into his waistband, pulled out a gun, and fired it into the floor. The bullet reportedly went through the floor and into the wall by the front door and landed on the walkway in front of the front door.

Hill reportedly packed up his belongings from the closet and threw them down the stairs.

A witness reportedly told the officer that she woke up to a loud bang and could “smell the smoke” when she came out of her bedroom. She said she saw Hill throw his belongings down the stairs and he told her, “I’m not in the right mind to deal with this.”

A neighbor reportedly heard a loud bang but could not be sure whether it was a gun or people moving furniture.

Hill reportedly left the apartment, leaving his belongings on the front porch, and walked toward the front of the complex, where he was contacted by officers.

Officers reportedly found a .45 Cal casing and a bullet.

A gunpowder residue test conducted at the jail was reportedly negative.

Post Miranda, Hill reportedly said he came home and got into an argument with his girlfriend, then left. He said he did not see a gun or hear a gun go off and did not know anything about bullet holes inside the apartment.

Hill has no local criminal history. Judge Meshon Rawls ordered him held without bail pending a hearing on a motion from the State Attorney’s Office to hold him without bail until trial.

Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
