Staff report

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Remy Eduardo Acosta, 44, and Crystal Michelle Walker, 29, were arrested yesterday and charged with burglary of an unoccupied dwelling after an elderly couple returned to their second home and found the pair inside, the house ransacked, and $22,900 in jewelry missing.

At about 3:42 p.m. on November 5, an Alachua County Sheriff’s Deputy responded to the home in Kimberly Woods, where an elderly couple reported that they had returned to their second home and found an unknown person asleep inside the house. The deputy reported that Acosta was asleep in a chair in the living room and Walker was asleep on the living room floor.

The deputy noted that the house had previously been broken into on October 23, and the suspects in that case have not been identified. The house was reportedly ransacked at that time, but the deputy reported that when he arrived, it was “further ransacked and numerous drawers had been emptied as if they were looking for something.” The owners reportedly added an additional lock to the back door after the first burglary, and the deputy reported that the lock had been forced open. The victims reported that they were missing numerous pieces of jewelry worth $22,900.

Post Miranda, Acosta reportedly declined to answer any questions.

Post Miranda, Walker reportedly said that she had followed Acosta into the house at 10 a.m. that morning and that he told her it was abandoned. She said they found the back door unlocked and fell asleep.

Acosta, who is described as homeless on the arrest report, has four felony convictions (none violent) and six misdemeanor convictions (none violent). He is on probation for tampering with an electronic monitoring device. Judge Adam Lee ordered him held without bail for violating probation and set bail at $5,000 on the new charge.

Walker, who is described as homeless on the arrest report, has five felony convictions (none violent) and one misdemeanor conviction (non-violent). She has served one state prison sentence and was released in September 2023. Judge Adam Lee set her bail at $5,000.

Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
