ORLANDO, Fla. – Every week as part of the News 6 Getting Results Award segment, we highlight people in Central Florida who are going above and beyond – and making a difference for their neighbors.

This year, we noticed a theme. Our winners were taking the hobbies and activities they love and using that interest to help others. We traveled thousands of miles criss-crossing Central Florida to bring you their stories.

And as the year comes to a close, we thought it was a perfect time to reflect on some of those stories and the moments that made an impact on so many.

We started the year in Orlando’s Baldwin Park neighborhood where the McBride family’s home was covered in thousands of lights. Their annual Christmas display has been growing every year. It started attracting so much attention they added a donation box on the street. The donations go toward underprivileged students at nearby Audubon Elementary.

We traveled to Brevard County and met volunteer, Mary Keho, at the Catherine Schweinsberg Rood Central Library in Cocoa. Keho spends her days helping seniors sign up for Medicare.

We featured Tony Minichino who tried his hand at writing a children’s book. Now, it can be found in local pediatric hospitals.

We stopped by The Villages and watched as the Abundance of Love sewing club created dolls for kids in pediatric hospitals.

We traveled to Port Orange where Marianne Chapin, a boxing coach, uses her skills to help patients with Parkinson’s Disease.

We tagged along as Ed Rosa turned wrenches to help people who can’t afford to get their car repaired. His nonprofit, Fix It Forward, helps low income families and veterans with car repairs.

We met Drew Campbell who runs Getaboard. The nonprofit uses skateboarding to inspire disadvantaged youth.

Finally, we ended the year with Katia Baker. The wig maker started her business with an entry level sewing machine. Now, she’s running a successful business and donating her time and materials to help children with hair loss due to cancer treatment.

From the Conklin Davis Center for the Visually Impaired in Daytona Beach to a food pantry in Kissimmee, your neighbors got results.

We want to tell more stories like these in the year ahead. If you know someone getting results, we want to know about them. It’s easy to nominate someone you know.

Just fill out the form here and you just might see them featured in the coming weeks.
