The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office says the boy’s injuries are non-life-threatening.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — About an hour after fireworks were set off in downtown Jacksonville on New Year’s Day, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office says a shooting happened at James Weldon Johnson Park which left a boy injured “with at least one gunshot wound.”

JSO Sergeant Smith said that at approximately 1 a.m., an off-duty officer was flagged down in reference to the boy being shot.

Smith told First Coast News a crowd of people were at the park when two groups started arguing. After the argument, which Smith described as brief, the shooting started.

According to JSO, there were “at least two shooters,” and it is believed that the boy does not have any affiliation with the groups. The boy was taken to a local hospital, as he was shot in the left leg, Smith said; his injuries are non-life-threatening.

“We’re still working on the suspect description at this time,” Smith said. “This appears to be an isolated incident.”

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call JSO’s non-emergency number at 904-630-0500. To provide information anonymously, contact Crime Stoppers at 1-866-845-TIPS.
