SEMINOLE COUNTY, Fla. – Nature lovers across Florida started 2025 with an invigorating tradition: “First Day Hikes.” Organized by state parks nationwide, these guided and self-paced hikes offered families and friends the perfect way to welcome the new year with fresh air, exercise, and reflection.

At state parks in Central Florida, participants embraced the opportunity to connect with the outdoors. Guides encouraged hikers to focus on mindfulness and self-reflection while exploring trails.

“This hike is going to be a lot about self-reflection,” Park Ranger Josie Galvan explained. “Think about how you want to spend your time in nature moving forward, especially this upcoming year.”

Many hikers brought their New Year’s resolutions along for the trek at Wekiwa Springs on the first day of the year. One participant shared their goal of visiting two national forests in 2025, including Yellowstone or Glacier.

With 175 state parks in Florida, the options for exploration were endless. For those who preferred solo hikes, trail maps were available at ranger stations. Hikers were reminded to stay hydrated, wear proper footwear, and leave no trace to preserve the environment.

“I hope you start off this year refreshed, renewed, and ready to get back into nature,” said Galvan. “And for those who don’t know, there’s a Thursday morning hike every week—so come out and join us!”

If you missed this year’s First Day Hikes, Florida’s state parks remain open year-round, offering plenty of opportunities to explore wildlife and enjoy the outdoors. Visit FloridaStateParks.org for more information about local trails and upcoming events.
