DECATUR, Ill. (WCIA) — Two Central Illinois sheriff’s offices are warning residents of scams where callers impersonate local government officials and demand money to resolve missing court dates.

The Macon Sheriff’s Office posted on Facebook Tuesday saying a resident received a call from someone who claimed to be “Sgt. Davis” with the Macon County Sheriff’s Department. The scammer tried to solicit money after telling a county resident they missed a court date for a serious crime.

The scammer grew frustrated with the resident after they asked follow-up questions.

Additionally, the scammer reportedly spoke fluent English and used the number (217) 216-8950 to appear to be from Central Illinois.

The Macon County Sheriff’s Office said they will never ask for money over the phone. They advise to never provide personal or financial information and hang up immediately.

The Vermilion County Sheriff’s Department also said residents complained of a similar phone scam where victims are asked to send Bitcoin to avoid being arrested.

Law enforcement leaders said they will never contact citizens over the phone to tell them about an arrest warrant or fines owed. Additionally, as Illinois has ended cash bail in the state, people with legitimate warrants cannot post money for bond.

In addition to not giving personal information to random callers and hanging up, department officials ask potential scam victims to file a police report by calling 911 and asking to speak with an officer or deputy.
