MUSKEGON, Mich. (WOOD) A man accused of stabbing his boss two weeks ago at a Fruitport Township business had his criminal case put on hold pending a competency exam.

A Muskegon County judge on Monday approved the competency exam for 32-year-old Nathan Joseph Mahoney.

Mahoney is charged with assault with intent to murder for a Dec. 17 knife attack. It happened during a staff meeting at Anderson Express.

According to court records, Mahoney left the meeting and returned 10 minutes later wearing a black medical mask. He`s accused of walking up to the company president and stabbing him in the rib cage using a knife with a 4-inch blade.

The company president is expected to recover.

A hearing scheduled for Thursday has been put on hold pending the competency exam. It will help the court determine if Mahoney understands the charges against him and can assist in his own defense.

Competency exams do not determine whether a defendant was sane at the time of the crime.

Another court date has been set for April. Mahoney remains jailed on a $500,000 bond.
