The girl had just turned 10 the day after Christmas.
MIAMI — A 10-year-old girl was killed when she was struck by a stray bullet during a New Year’s celebration in South Florida.
Yaneliz Munguia, who just turned 10 on Dec. 26, was celebrating with family members on Northwest 27th Avenue in Allapattah when she suddenly collapsed, officials said.
According to NBC 6, police believe Munguia was struck by a stray bullet fired into the air just after midnight.
After the girl collapsed, her parents started looking over her for injuries and eventually located a wound to the back of her head. Officials said her parents placed her in a car and drove around looking for a hospital while calling 911.
Fire rescue eventually located the family and rushed Munguia to Ryder Trauma Center where she was pronounce dead.
The Miami Dade Police Dept. put out a flyer announcing they are treating Munguia’s death as a homicide.
