At least 10 people were killed early Wednesday in Louisiana when a car drove into a large crowd amid New Year celebrations.

The Advocate reported that the mass casualty incident occurred at 4 a.m. near the intersection of Bourbon Street and Canal Street in New Orleans.

“This man was trying to run over as many people as he possibly could,” New Orleans police Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick said.

The man, who has not been identified, allegedly shot two police officers after crashing his car. Though an improvised explosive device was recovered from the scene, the FBI said the incident was not terrorism.

WWL reported that about 36 people were transported to the hospital. Their conditions are unclear at this point. The two officers are in stable condition, officials said.

Local bars and hotels were evacuated following the incident. It is unclear whether a suspect is in custody.
