SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WCIA) — One person is dead after a shooting in Springfield on New Year’s Day.

According to the Springfield Police Department, officers responded to south 17th Street around 11:40 a.m.

When officers arrived, they found a female victim who had been shot. She was transported to a local hospital but later died from her injuries.

According to Sangamon County Coroner, Jim Allmon, the victim was pronounced deceased at 12:11 p.m. Allmon was able to confirm that the victim was a 31-year-old woman, but her identity is being withheld until the next of kin are notified.

An autopsy is scheduled for Thursday. The death remains under investigation by the Springfield Police Department and the Sangamon County Coroner.
