A 27-year-old woman in Alabama was arrested on New Year’s Day after she allegedly shot and killed her ex-husband, then dropped his body off at a local hospital.
Genesis P. Tanksley was taken into custody on Wednesday and charged with one count of murder in the slaying of Lazarus Tanksley, records reviewed by Law&Crime show.
Detectives with the Mobile Police Department’s Homicide Unit at about 1 a.m. on Jan. 1 responded to a hospital after being contacted regarding a deceased Black male, Mobile CBS affiliate WKRG reported.
Hospital personnel told officers that the victim had been dropped off at the facility by a Black woman driving her personal vehicle, a sliver Lexus SUV. The woman — later identified by authorities as Genesis Tanksley — was described as having braided hair with red tips.
After identifying the victim as Lazarus Tanksley, officers responded to his home in the 700 block of St. Stephens Road, which is about 240 miles southwest of Birmingham. Shortly afterward, the sheriff’s office took control of the investigation.
Investigators at the scene made contact with a male witness who was allegedly at the home at the time of the shooting, Mobile NBC affiliate WPMI reported. The witness allegedly told investigators that he had helped a woman load Lazarus Tanksley into the silver Lexus SUV. While the witness did not know the woman’s name, he allegedly said she was the victims ex and described her as being a Black woman whose hair was braided and tipped with red.
A second witness at about 11 a.m. on Wednesday contacted the sheriff’s Major Crimes Unit regarding the shooting. The witness claimed to have been present at the time of the shooting
“The witness stated that she traveled to the victim’s residence with [Genesis Tanksley],” the sheriff’s office reportedly said in a news release. “She stated Genesis and the victim were arguing and then she heard a gunshot. She fled the scene on foot and has not seen or spoken to Genesis [Tanksley] since the shooting.”
Genesis Tanksley was booked into the Mobile County Jail and is currently being held without bond.
This week’s arrest if not the first time Genesis Tanksley has been in trouble with the law. She and Lazarus Tanksley were both arrested in October 2024 in connection with a domestic violence incident, Mobile Fox affiliate WALA reported.
According to the report, police responded to the St. Stephens Road home regarding a domestic violence call — one of several such calls from the address. Due to the number of times officers had been to the home, officers decided to arrest both Genesis and Lazarus Tanksley. However, Genesis Tanksley reportedly fled the scene in a silver Lexus SUV, leading police on a 30-minute car chase before she was taken into custody.
