WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR)— January marks the start of a busy month in Washington, D.C. with members of the 119th Congress set to be sworn in, funeral services for former President Jimmy Carter and the inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump.

Jan. 3

The 119th Congress will begin Friday, Jan. 3 with Republicans holding the majority in both the House and Senate. Republicans hold a narrow 220-215 majority in the House and a 53-47 majority in the Senate.

Following the official swearing in of new members, the House is expected to hold a vote to elect a Speaker of the House. Current Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) is hoping to hold onto his speaker gavel following an endorsement from President-elect Trump.

However, Johnson will need almost every Republican vote to win.

Jan. 6

Lawmakers will meet Monday, Jan. 6 during a joint session of Congress to certify the results of the 2024 election. It marks the last step in the certification process and will be presided over by Vice President Kamala Harris.

Jan. 7

On Tuesday, Jan. 7, former President Jimmy Carter will lie in state at the U.S. Capitol. Members of Congress will gather to honor Carter during a special ceremony. The public will also be invited to pay their respects. Carter will lie in state at the U.S. Capitol until his funeral service on Jan. 9.

Jan. 9

A funeral service will be held for former President Carter on Thursday, Jan. 9 at the Washington National Cathedral. President Joe Biden has declared Jan. 9 a National Day of Mourning and has ordered flags to be flown at half-staff.

Jan. 14

Cabinet hearings for Trump’s nominees are also expected to start in January. On Tuesday, Jan. 14, the Senate Armed Services Committee is scheduled to hold a hearing for Trump’s pick for Secretary of Defense, Pete Hegseth.

Jan. 19

President-elect Trump is expected to hold a “victory rally” ahead of Inauguration Day at Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C. on Sunday, Jan. 19.

Jan. 20

President-elect Trump will be sworn in as the 47th president of the United States at the U.S. Capitol on Monday, Jan. 20, which is also Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The day will feature several events, including a luncheon at the Capitol and a parade.
