CLAXTON, Ga. () — Following the fatal New Year’s Day attack on Bourbon Street, a concerned Claxton family had to consider if they should sell their Sugar Bowl tickets for their safety.

“We kind of just felt like should we stop? Like, what do we do? Do we still go?” Hannah Lee said.

Thousands were in the area to cheer on Notre Dame or the Georgia Bulldogs. The Lees were driving to New Orleans on Wednesday morning when they heard the tragic news that at least 15 people were killed, and dozens were injured in the attack.

Unsure of what to do or what the status of the game was, they continued driving and watched for news updates. Hannah said they felt more comfortable once officials announced heavier security at Caesar’s Superdome and the game had been pushed back to Thursday.

“We still want to have a great experience,” Tanner said. “It’s a tragedy, and we are praying for the families that have been impacted.”

They family said they have made the most of their situation and the trip. Overall, they wanted to keep a good attitude like so many other fans in the city of the game.

“There’s still people out and about, and they’re super friendly people,” Hannah said. “It’s been a lot better than I expected. We tried to stay inside as much as possible, just because you never know. But we still have met a lot of Notre Dame and Georgia fans who have been really nice.”
