ATLANTA, Ga. () – Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter was brought to the Georgia State Capital in Atlanta on Saturday afternoon, the first day of his state funeral.

Georgia Governor Brian Kemp and Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens lead a moment of silence during the service. Other dignitaries were also present, including former Georgia Governor Sonny Perdue.

“For all Georgian’s we’re proud that a Georgian became president of the United States, and I think, again in his years after the presidency, continued to minister to people around the world in so many ways,” said Perdue. “So, we are grateful, we’re proud of his legacy and very appreciative that he began right here in Middle Georgia and South Georgia.”

Until 2020, Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter volunteered one week a year for Habitat for Humanity, a nonprofit organization that helps needy people in the U.S. and in other countries renovate and build homes for themselves.

He also taught Sunday school in the Maranatha Baptist Church of Plains.

On December 10, 2002, the Norwegian Nobel Committee awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for 2002 to Carter “for his decades of untiring effort to find peaceful solutions to international conflicts, to advance democracy and human rights, and to promote economic and social development.”
