'It's a blessing to be here': Tarpon Springs celebrates annual Epiphany Ball

TARPON SPRINGS, Fla. (WFLA) — Tarpon Springs is known for its charm, from its iconic sponge docks to its deep Greek orthodox traditions.

But after last year’s hurricanes wreaked havoc, the annual epiphany celebrations take on a new significance.

“Every single year, as long as I can remember, we celebrate epiphany every year,” attendee Nikki Christu said. “It’s a blessing to be here.”

The highlight of the celebration comes Monday with the cross dive at Spring Bayou, drawing thousands to St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Cathedral.

But this year, residents are reflecting on how far they’ve come.

“It was heartbreaking,” one resident said. “I saw so many people’s homes destroyed. I also still work, and our office was devastated. We are right across from the river; the whole river came over.”

Despite setbacks, Tarpon Springs is ready to move forward.
“The epiphany is a time when people can celebrate, because everything has been kind of negative with the hurricanes,” chairman Emmanuel Gombos said. “A lot of our people were hurt, strong and very hard, and this is a time to celebrate and try to turn things positive.”

And for those directly involved, the tradition is even more personal.

“I will be holding the dove, which represents holy spirit for this year’s epiphany,” attendee Michalia Makryllos said.
From hardship to hope, Tarpon Springs is showing what is means to stay “Tarpon strong.”
And Saturday’s ball is just a part of the celebration of resilience, faith and community.
The Epiphany celebration in Tarpon Springs will be held on Monday, Jan. 6 starting at 8 a.m.
