During a state funeral on Saturday, Jason Carter spoke about his grandparents’ legacy.

ATLANTA — Jimmy Carter’s grandson paid a moving tribute on Saturday, thanking those who have helped carry on the former president’s legacy.

Jason Carter opened up the funeral service held by The Carter Center — an organization where Carter’s vision for propelling humanitarian efforts forward came to life.

Standing inside the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library and Museum, Jason said that the room was filled with his grandfather’s life not just because it was a museum or had a collection of his beloved paintings but because of the people who were in it.

“His spirit fills this place,” Jason said. “The people in this room from the library and the museum and The Carter Center itself; you all are the real keepers of my grandparents’ legacy.”

He added that the library and museum hold a historical legacy that tells his grandparents’ story, which he said is an “unbelievable American story.” He described how the workers hold the story and are able to present it to his kids and all the generations to come.

Jason went on to discuss The Carter Center and how when Jimmy Carter won a Nobel Peace Prize, it was in no small part because of the work the organization has done and continues to do.

“You continue the vibrant, living legacy of what is my grandfather’s life’s work,” Jason said.

He said that it’s amazing what one can accomplish in 100 years, but as people across the world mourn and honor his legacy, he wants those who have worked for the Carters to know that, in many ways, they’re talking about the work they do on a daily basis.

“While we mourn my grandfather’s passing, I know in my heart, and you all do, that his legacy will live on not only because of the millions of people that he touched across the globe but very specifically because of your spirit and your knowledge and the work and the track record that you do every day,” Jason said to the crowd.
