SANGAMON COUNTY, Ill. (WCIA) — A shooting in Springfield on Saturday night has left a man dead and a woman injured.

The Sheriff’s Office responded to shots fired on East Carpenter Street around 7:45 p.m. Residents said a vehicle was shot at multiple times and that the vehicle transported two victims to a nearby hospital.

Deputies learned that a 23-year-old woman was shot but that her injury is non-life-threatening. A 31-year-old man received multiple serious gunshot wounds.

The victim was identified by Sangamon County Coroner, Jim Allmon, as Lajarvious Smith of Springfield. Smith was pronounced deceased at 8:33 p.m. on Saturday, shortly after he arrived at the hospital.

The Investigations Division canvased the area for witnesses, video footage and other evidence. Detectives determined over 50 shots were fired. They also believe a dark, four-door sedan was involved in the shooting. The vehicle was last seen fleeing east on Carpenter Street.

An autopsy is scheduled for Monday. The death remains under investigation by the Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office and the Sangamon County Coroner.

Anyone with additional information is asked to call the Sheriff’s Office at 217-753-6840, or Crime Stoppers of Sangamon and Menard Counties at 217-788-8427.
