In 2014, Beyoncé, Jay-Z, and Solange Knowles made history. The trio attended a Met Gala after party and, in the elevator, Solange began hitting Jay-Z while Beyoncé watched. While it was a very tumultuous night for the family, a source said Beyoncé seemed very happy before the infamous fight.

Beyoncé seemed happy shortly before Solange fought Jay-Z

When Beyoncé and Jay-Z arrived at the Met Gala, eyewitnesses said they were affectionate with each other. At one point, she dropped a piece of jewelry and he offered it back to her in a mock-proposal pose.

“Beyoncé had the biggest smile,” a source told Us Weekly at the time. They added that the couple “went inside, arm-in-arm.” 

By the end of the night, however, things took a turn. An insider noticed that the family “did abruptly leave.” While in a hotel elevator, Solange began to punch and kick Jay-Z while Beyoncé watched. A source explained that he said something inappropriate to the sisters, sparking Solange’s reaction. 

“Toward the end of the night, Jay said something inappropriate to Beyoncé and Solange, and [Solange] snapped,” an insider told People. “When they got in the elevator, it escalated quickly the way family tensions can. It got exceptionally heated the way family moments can.”

They shared why Beyoncé did not try to intervene. 

“Beyoncé tried to stay out of it,” a source said. “She does not approve of violence. They are trying to put the situation past them now.”

They also noted that Solange was “super protective of Beyoncé.” 

Beyoncé and Jay-Z released a statement about the situation

Not long after the video footage leaked, Beyoncé, Jay-Z, and Solange made a public statement about it.

“As a result of the public release of the elevator security footage from Monday, May 5th, there has been a great deal of speculation about what triggered the unfortunate incident. But the most important thing is that our family has worked through it,” they said in a statement to the Associated Press. “Jay and Solange each assume their share of responsibility for what has occurred. They both acknowledge their role in this private matter that has played out in the public. They both have apologized to each other, and we have moved forward as a united family.”

The trio said that they, like any other family, had their problems. They claimed to have moved past the issue, though.

“The reports of Solange being intoxicated or displaying erratic behavior throughout that evening are simply false. At the end of the day, families have problems, and we’re no different. We love each other, and above all, we are family. We’ve put this behind us and hope everyone else will do the same.”

They have since repaired their relationship

After the fight, Solange said she no longer had a problem with Jay-Z. She felt that all she needed to say about the incident in the statement.

“What’s important is that my family and I are all good,” Solange said. “What we had to say collectively was in the statement that we put out, and we all feel at peace with that.”

Jay-Z also said he didn’t hold anything against his sister-in-law.

“We’ve always had a great relationship … We had one disagreement, ever. Before and after, we’ve been cool,” Jay-Z said. “She’s like my sister. I will protect her. That’s my sister, not my sister-in-law. My sister. Period.”
