A man with two daughters was discovered dead more than a week after he went missing following a peculiar incident during a family trip to a resort in Michigan. Robert Loren Bacon, aged 52, vanished after informing his teenage daughters that he had to quickly fetch an item from the car and never returned.

On December 27, Bacon had reached the Bavarian Inn resort in Frankenmuth to join his daughters, aged 15 and 13, and his mother for a planned family getaway, as informed by his ex-wife, Melissa McLenna to McClatchy News.

Upon his arrival at the hotel around 6:40 p.m., security footage captured Bacon carrying his belongings to his room. He then proceeded towards the pool area to meet his daughters as planned. However, before meeting them, he mentioned to the girls that he needed to retrieve something from his car.

“[He] was going to his car to get something and was coming back to the pool area to join his family,” McLenna said. “He never returned to his family at the pool.”

After the beloved dad failed to return, his family grew concerned, and on Dec. 30, they reported him missing. McLenna turned to social media, asking anyone who might have seen him to contact investigators.

However, Bacon’s body was recovered by dive teams from the Cass River near Heritage Park at around 2 p.m. on Saturday, according to the Frankenmuth Police Department.

“The preliminary cause of death appears to be drowning, but a final determination will be made by the Saginaw County Medical Examiner’s Office,” police said.

“The investigation into the circumstances surrounding Mr. Bacon’s death is ongoing.”

Though Bacon had told his family he was going to his car, surveillance footage from the resort shows the father of two never reached the vehicle.

“[Investigators] have video showing him going to the fun center after leaving the hotel room, never coming back to his car,” McLenna told WNEM three days before his body was found.

His ex-wife also said that some exits don’t have cameras and that there’s no “video showing he exited the building.”

McLenna said Bacon’s silver sedan was still parked in the resort parking lot on Wednesday, but police found nothing suspicious inside during their investigation.

The department also determined that his keys, wallet, and phone were on him when he disappeared.

However, McLenna said his phone had been turned off since he was last seen.

Following the news of her ex-husband’s death, McLenna made a Facebook post on Sunday mourning Bacon.

“I have no words to describe how we feel. We are so sad. I just want to say thank you to everyone that helped look for Robert,” she wrote.

“Thank you to all that prayed for us and that are continuing to pray for us.”

The Bavarian Inn resort in Frankenmuth is a roughly 90-mile drive northwest of Detroit.
