SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WCIA) — The Illinois Department of Public Health is asking residents to stay vigilant against the rise of norovirus.

In a Facebook post on Monday, department officials said the virus is making its rounds across the state.

The virus, a common cause of gastrointestinal disease, has symptoms like nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea, that develop between 12 and 48 hours after exposure. It usually lasts 1-3 days.

Health officials recommend people should wash their hands frequently with soap and water for 20 seconds, as well as cleaning and disinfecting commonly used surfaces. Hand sanitizer is not effective against norovirus.

Officials said people fighting norovirus should also wait three days after symptoms clear up before resuming cooking and caring for other people to stop the spread of norovirus.

In addition, they said to seek medical help if you experience severe vomiting, diarrhea, or dehydration.

More information on Norovirus can be found on the Center for Disease Control’s website.
