SAVANNAH, Ga. () – Monday, Jan. 6, is the last day Former President and native Georgian Jimmy Carter lay in repose in Atlanta before his body departs for Washington D.C.

People from all walks of life, from Savannah to California, traveled to the site. There were tears, hugs and people taking pictures and leaving flowers.

One group that spoke to ’s Kaley Fedko had personal ties to President Carter: a group of teachers who taught his two great grandchildren at Mary Lin Elementary School. They travelled together to honor him today.

“One of the things that I noticed is hearing all of the accolades about President Carter and his kindness and his humanitarian vision and his empathy,” said Denise Bringslid. “It’s just not shocking that his great grandchildren exhibit the exact same traits. They are incredibly kind, incredibly giving. That’s the whole Carter family.”

The Former President’s body will depart at 6 a.m. on Tuesday to be taken to the United States Capitol where he will lie in state.
