SAVANNAH, Ga. () – Funeral services continue today for former President Jimmy Carter – as his begins his final trip to Washington D.C.

Carter died at the age 100 and leaves behind a life dedicated to decades of service. From plains to politics the former President Jimmy Carter accomplished a lot even after leaving the White House – becoming the only president to win a Nobel Peace Prize after his term.

Now the journey to get the president’s body from Atlanta to the nation’s capital begins in a few short hours Tuesday morning.

The funeral began Saturday morning in his hometown of Plains Georgia with a motorcade ride. Here they stopped at his boyhood home, and the Methodist church where the Carters married in 1946.

From there the motorcade traveled to Georgia’s State Capitol in Atlanta.

“There was a lot of love on the side of the road for the motorcade. Every overpass had people on it. It was amazing and gave me goosebumps,” said Chip Carter, Jimmy Carter’s son, at a service for his father in Atlanta this week when recalling the motorcade.

The motorcade was met by Governor Brian Kemp and Atlanta’s Mayor. This will be Carter’s last time in Atlanta where he served as a State Senator and Governor for Georgia.

This morning until 6 a.m. people can pay their respects there. He will depart the Carter Center at 9:30 this morning, before flying to Washington D.C.

Carter will lie at the U.S. Capitol rotunda, followed by a national funeral service on Thursday.
All living presidents have been invited. President Biden will deliver a eulogy at the service.
Afterward, Carter will return to Plains for a private service and burial, but the public is invited to line the motorcade route for his final journey.

“He was really the first president that I remember truly being engaged with as a kid. My brother was in the military, and he was my brother’s first commander and chief. It was really a big deal. He was from Georgia. And he did us proud,” shared Lawrence Gwen, who is from Savannah and visited Carter Monday.

The public will be able to pay their respects in D.C. today.
From 7 p.m. to midnight today and from 7 a.m. tomorrow until 7 a.m. on Thursday.

• Jan 7-8: Lying in State at U.S. Capitol
• Jan 9: National Funeral Service at Washington National Cathedral
• Final Resting Place: Plains, GA—Public invited to line motorcade route

President Biden also signed a bill to name a U.S. Postal Service facility in Plains after the Carters.
The Carter Center says instead of flowers to make a donation to the carter center which was setup by the former president. It was set up to eliminate diseases, restoring peace and monitoring elections around the world.

Carter will be buried Friday in a private graveside service, in a plot near his home in Plains.
