SAVANNAH, Ga () – With cold weather underway, a local heating business has collected nearly 1,000 coats and winter hats for kids in need.

Canady’s Heating, Plumbing and Air had their fifth annual “Canady’s Coats for Kids” coat drop off for children on Tuesday.

“So, when I got the idea years and years ago and seeing children at bus stops without jackets on in the mornings, that’s where it all kicked off,” Fred Canady, founder of Canady’s Heating, Plumbing and Air said. “And we’ve been at it for five years now in this program.”

They have partnered with United Way of the Coastal Empire, and they have donated, collected and distributed thousands of new coats.

“Our mission is improving lives by mobilizing the caring power of our community,” Kimberly Waller, President and CEO of the United Way of the Coastal Empire said. “Fred is a perfect example of what that means. It is incredible to see the community partners and community residents who come and donate the coats. We can’t do it alone. Being able to do this together makes us so, so much stronger.”

They told News 3 that each year they have seen more lend helping hands.

“It just warms our hearts,” Canady said. “You know, we just love it. We love the outpouring of the community. It’s just it’s just hard to believe when you when you witness that firsthand.”

The coats are for kids ages 17 and under. If you’re in need, United Way encourages individuals to call their 211 information and referral service for help.
