A North Carolina father has been charged with manslaughter and child abuse after his toddler son died from being left in a room with “elevated temperatures” for more than 12 hours.

Two-year-old River Carter was pronounced dead when medics arrived at the scene in West End on December 2, the Moore County Sheriff’s Office said.

Investigators determined that the room where the toddler had been “isolated” was heated by a space heater. While police did not say exactly what the medical examiner said about the death, they did say that they arrested the child’s father, 27-year-old Aaron Lynwood Carter, after reviewing them on Tuesday.

Carter was booked into the Moore County Detention Center on charges of involuntary manslaughter and child abuse inflicting serious bodily injury.

He’s being held on a $500,000 bond and is due in court on Thursday.
