Ranking Jets coaching options, from good fits to no-thank-yous

The Jets have cast a wide, wide net in their search for a new head coach.

The team has already started interviewing candidates for the vacant position. In addition, the organization has also requested interviews with a long list of other potential candidates this week. The ideal qualities that the Jets should look for in a new head coach are currently a topic of debate among fans. Some supporters believe that the team needs an offensive mastermind to bring a top 10 offense, a component that has been lacking for years. On the other hand, there are those who argue in favor of a CEO-type coach who will oversee all aspects of the team without getting involved in play calling. Moreover, many fans are hoping for a disciplinarian to instill structure and order, given the team’s history of undisciplined play.

I can see all of these arguments. I have been through enough of these searches to know that no one knows what the secret sauce is. I thought the Jets got it right in 2021, when they hired Robert Saleh, who was a hot candidate at the time. When Todd Bowles was hired, he had been the assistant coach of the year the season before. Adam Gase was an offensive mind, who had overseen the highest-scoring offense in NFL history.

The Jets have tried many different avenues, and they have not worked. So, I don’t pretend to have the answers when it comes to who the Jets hire. But I have some opinions.
