Local events to honor Martin Luther King Jr.

SAVANNAH, Ga. () – There are many events scheduled in the Coastal Empire and Lowcountry to honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

The civil rights leader is remembered each year with a federal holiday observed on the third Monday of January. This year’s holiday falls on Monday, Jan. 20.

Here is a running list of local events celebrating MLK Jr. over the next few weeks.

Savannah

The Citywide Memorial Worship Service is set for Sunday, Jan. 19, at St. Phillip Monumental African Methodist Episcopal Church.

Savannah’s 44th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Observance Day parade is slated for Monday, Jan. 20, downtown. Visit here for a closer look at the parade route.

Starting at 10 a.m., will broadcast the parade live on our CW channel and stream it on our website.

There will also be a Jazz Concert held at the Unitarian Universalist Church in Troup Square on Monday, Jan. 20, at 2 p.m.

Feed the Hungry’s 16th annual MLK Community Dinner: “A Recommitment to Service” will be held at 2 p.m. right after the parade on Monday, Jan. 20, at the Frank Callen Boys & Girls Club (510 E. Charlton St.). For more information, call 912-436-7380.

Bluffton

The Bluffton MLK Observance Committee will host the 40th annual MLK Banquet on Friday, Jan. 17, at 5:30 p.m. at the Rotary Community Center in Oscar Frazier Park. This year’s theme is “Mission Possible: Protecting Freedom, Justice and Democracy in the Spirit of Nonviolence.”

The Memorial Program, March and Unity Picnic is set for Monday, Jan. 20, at the May River Theatre in Bluffton Town Hall (20 Bridge St.). After the program featuring local youth groups, commentary from local leaders and a visual presentation, the MLK parade will begin on Pritchard Street and end at Bluffton Oyster Factory Park.

Residents are encouraged to stay at the park for a community celebration, fire pit, music and free food. Everyone is encouraged to bring empty backpacks, snacks, non-perishables and school supplies to help with the committee’s initiative to aid the nonprofit Backpack Buddies, which assists local students with school supplies.

Metter

The annual Prayer Breakfast at the Pond House is scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 11, starting at 9 a.m.

The Observance Day Program is set for Sunday, Jan. 19, starting at 3 p.m. at St. Matthew Missionary Baptist Church.

The following day, on Monday, Jan. 20, the MLK parade will begin at 2 p.m. The parade begins at the Metter Police Department and travels down MLK Jr. Boulevard and through downtown Metter.

Tybee Island

The Tybee MLK Human Rights Organization will host a free film and discussion at the Tybee Post Theater at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 12. Registration is requested.

Tybee Beach Clean will host a beach clean-up from 4 to 5 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 20, at 1509 Strand Ave. near the Tybee Pier. All equipment will be provided.

Wayne County

The Wayne County Martin Luther King Jr. Observance Day Committee will host the annual MLK Day parade on Saturday, Jan. 18, at 1 p.m. This year’s theme is “Representing Unity.”

The NAACP will host its annual Unity program on Sunday, Jan. 19, at 6 p.m. at Bennett Union Missionary Baptist Church.

The Youth Council of the Wayne County NAACP will host their annual MLK Day Breakfast the following day on Monday, Jan. 20, at 9 a.m. at Bennett Union Missionary Baptist Church’s Social Hall.
