A man in Texas with the name of his ex-girlfriend tattooed across his chest “severely stabbed” the woman last weekend — killing her in a late-night domestic violence attack — just one day before her birthday, cops and family say.
Jorge Albert Chavez, 30, is accused of killing Dafne Michelle Davila, 27, at a home in the 600 block of Zinc Place in the Horizon City area of El Paso on Sunday, according to the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office. His mug shot shows the name “Dafne” inked across the upper part of his chest, close to his neck.
“At approximately 3:30 a.m., El Paso County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a report of family violence occurring,” police officials said in a press release. “Upon arrival, deputies noticed the suspect leaving the scene in a gray 2024 Chevrolet pickup truck. … Once inside the residence, deputies discovered the female victim had been severely stabbed. She was immediately transported to a local area hospital, but unfortunately succumbed to her injuries.”
According to Davila’s family, she and Chavez were in a tumultuous relationship together that was broken off sometime before her murder. They told local Univision affiliate KINT that domestic violence played a major role in why the relationship ended, though Davila would often go back to Chavez in an attempt to make things work.
“In reality it’s so hard for me to walk away and idk why because old me wouldn’t of lasted a second in this place,” Davila told a relative in a text message that was shared with KINT. “I know l have you and I’m beyond grateful but I can’t explain why I’m attached all I ask for is please be patient with me.”
While an official motive has not been released, the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office has described Davila’s murder as stemming from a “domestic violence” incident of some sort between her and Chavez.
“This tragedy reminds us of the devastating impact domestic violence has on our community,” Sheriff Oscar Ugarte said in a statement after Chavez’s arrest on Jan. 5. “Thanks to the strong collaboration between our partnering agencies, we were able to quickly locate and apprehend the suspect.”
Chavez, who is being held on a $1 million bond, was caught in Reeves County — about 200 miles away — and extradited on Monday to El Paso by the sheriff’s Fugitive Apprehension Unit.
A GoFundMe launched for Davila’s family condemns Chavez for robbing her of “the opportunity to accomplish her goals” in life.
“Dafne was not only physically beautiful, but an even more beautiful soul and with an even bigger heart,” the GoFundMe description says. “She was taken too soon.”
