SAVOY, Ill. (WCIA) — Officials in Savoy will decide whether or not the Village will give almost a million dollars in tax incentives to a car dealership.

The Village of Savoy’s Board of Trustees will be voting to approve $950,000 for a building project at Serra Champaign Auto Dealership. The new building will be behind Serra Subaru — and raise the number of mechanic bays from eight to 20. The old facility will store car parts.

“The business is not going to receive a $950,000 check,” Village President John Brown said.

Instead, Brown said the money will come in the form of tax incentives.

“This will be paid out over up to ten-year period, up to $950,000 and will be based on the increased revenue that we see,” Brown said.

Brown said the Village has established a baseline for their property and sales tax. In that time period he said the Village would split money going over the number with Serra.

The biggest positive they highlighted was new jobs.

“I’d say a minimum of probably 25 just immediately,” Dealership Director Ben Quattron said. “Our sales volume is going to require more sales management, more sales associates, more accounting folks.”

Quattron said this increase in people coming to Savoy for work won’t just help his business.

“And what do we do every day? We will walk over to Schnucks and eat pizza. We, you know, live in the community,” Quattron said.

Brown agreed that the community will benefit as well.

“The revenue we earn off of our economic development helps us pay for other services like fire and parks and our bike paths and so forth. So, this is a good thing for the Village,” Brown said.

Quattron said the project is moving along well so far. He would be surprised if the facility isn’t up and running by July 4.
