Calera Police Chief David Hyche released the following statement regarding the incident:

Our officers recovered the firearm and took the student into custody. Our investigation is continuing and charges are being prepared.

Immediate law enforcement action is called for in situations like this to ensure the safety of students and staff.

Open conversations between parents and children about the dangers of firearms and the responsibilities that come with them can significantly impact safety. Parents should stress with their kids the importance of reporting any suspicious behavior or items to school authorities.

Additionally, securing firearms at home is crucial to prevent access by children. Community vigilance and communication with school resource officers (SROs) can help create a safer environment for everyone.
