DECATUR, Ill. (WCIA) — A woman who was convicted more than 20 years ago of a high-profile Central Illinois murder has died.

Jeanette Slover died in custody Wednesday, according to her legal team. The Illinois Department of Corrections said she died at a hospital outside of prison.

Slover was convicted in Macon County court of killing her former daughter-in-law Karyn Hearn Slover in 1996. Her husband Michael and son Michael Jr. — Karyn’s ex-husband — were also convicted of the crime. Karyn disappeared after leaving work and her body was found dismembered in garbage bags in Lake Shelbyville. She had been shot seven times in the head.

The Illinois Innocence Project took up her case last year, claiming she was wrongfully convicted and incarcerated. In a statement, the IIP said they were proud to know and represent her.

“We mourn Jeannette’s passing while noting the fight to prove her innocence will carry on,” they said.

The IIP said they have DNA results from many pieces of evidence that exclude Jeannette, her husband and her son from the crime scene.

“Collectively, Jeannette, her husband and her son spent more than 60 years in prison for a crime they did not commit,” the group added in their statement. “Jeannette and her family deserve justice. The victim of this murder, Karyn Slover, also deserves justice by having the actual perpetrators held accountable for her death.”

Michael Slover Sr. also died in prison. IDOC records indicate that Michael Slover Jr. was paroled earlier this year.
