CLAY COUNTY, Fla. — It’s been more than a month since Clay County 15-year-old Alyssa Umbaugh disappeared.

Because it is an ongoing investigation, Sheriff Michelle Cook was not able to share much information with First Coast News, but the sheriff did make it very clear that she and her investigators are taking this case seriously, as they do for every missing child.

Umbaugh is 5’7 with a thin build. She wears braces and has a nose piercing. Police say the teen was last seen in the Orange Park area near Blanding Boulevard and I-295.

“We know Alyssa very well. She’s run away multiple times. We are very familiar with her and her family. any young person that feels like they need to run away or any young person that goes missing, that’s always sad and tragic,” said Sheriff Cook.

Cook also acknowledged the human trafficking allegations in this case.

According to Cook, the CCSO is a founding partner with the Northeast Florida Intercept Task Force. A group of law enforcement agencies dedicated to fighting human trafficking.

CCSO is taking these allegations seriously.

“This issue of potential human trafficking which has been alleged in this case, that is a very important issue to me,” Cook said. “I want the community to know and her family to know that we are looking for her.”

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office and the State Attorney’s office are also working with authorities in Clay county.
