Trump's Surprisingly Mellow Response to SCOTUS Decision on Sentencing

One suspects he’s quite used to them, but even for President-elect Donald Trump, Thursday has been a busy day. While he spent the morning, along with his wife Melania, at the funeral services for former President Jimmy Carter and later in the day announcing additional appointments to his incoming administration, a bevy of legal decisions was being made regarding him.

First, the New York Court of Appeals denied his request to stay the sentencing in his Manhattan criminal case (set for Friday morning). Then, the Supreme Court did the same, just as the 11th Circuit denied his co-defendants’ efforts to block the release of (former) Special Counsel Jack Smith’s “Final Report.”

With none of the day’s rulings going his way, you might think his response — to the Supreme Court decision, in particular — might be a bit on the salty side. Instead, Trump took to Truth Social to thank the court for their time and effort in a post that seems rather sanguine.

I appreciate the time and effort of the United States Supreme Court in trying to remedy the great injustice done to me by the highly conflicted “Acting Justice,” who should not have been allowed to try this case. Every Legal Scholar stated, unequivocally, that this is a case that should never have been brought. There was no case against me. In other words, I am innocent of all of the Judge’s made up, fake charges. This was nothing other than Weaponization of our Justice System against a Political Opponent. It’s called Lawfare, and nothing like this has ever happened in the United States of America, and it should never be allowed to happen again. To this day, this highly political and corrupt Judge has put a gag order on me, which takes away my First Amendment right to speak about very important aspects of the case. For the sake and sanctity of the Presidency, I will be appealing this case, and am confident that JUSTICE WILL PREVAIL. The pathetic, dying remnants of the Witch Hunts against me will not distract us as we unite and, MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!

It doesn’t appear that he’s particularly surprised by the decision — or perturbed. There’s clearly no love lost for Judge Juan Merchan — the one who’ll be issuing his sentence Friday morning. But Trump appears resigned to pushing past sentencing and addressing the matter on appeal.

Presently, there’s a pending interlocutory appeal on the immunity issue, and once Trump has been sentenced, there will be a direct appeal of the judgment and sentence as well. The ultimate resolution of the matter may be months — if not years — away. But for all the effort expended to “get Trump,” what they got was a second Trump presidency.
