Wildfire survivor: Our house is gone, but 'community is intact'

() When Jennifer Champion first got an emergency alert from her child’s school, letting her know about the wildfires ripping through the Los Angeles area, she said she had to scramble to go pick up her kids.

After getting her children, Champion met her husband, but they didn’t have time to soak in the moment the family had to evacuate.

Champion later decided she needed to know what happened to their house, so she, her oldest daughter and husband went to rent an e-bike at a Santa Monica shop so they could see it.

While filling out the rental paperwork, Champion and her husband met a man who lived on their street.

“The chances of us meeting were impossible, but it’s possible because it happened,” Champion said.

That’s when the man told the couple their house was gone.

While she had been holding out hope the house was safe, Champion says she still found a miracle in that moment.

“The miracle is the community still is intact, meaning the people, meaning the love that we have for each other,” Champion said. “Everybody is in this same catastrophic heartache, but the outpouring of love people I haven’t heard from in decades have reached out. Their love is genuine. Their concern is genuine. They’re grieving with us.”
