Snow puts a freeze on some Augusta Regional Airport flights, what you need to know

AUGUSTA REGIONAL AIRPORT ()- Snow, sleet, and freezing rain have caused travel problems all day across our area. Some flights are even being delayed or canceled.

These icy elements have definitely put a freeze on flights in and out of the Augusta Regional Airport and airport staff explain exactly why.

“We don’t want an aircraft that lands on our runway, or takes off, but potentially skid off the runway and cause a crash…” Lauren Smith said.

That’s why Augusta Regional Airport Assistant Communications Director; Lauren Smith says all flights through 5pm have been canceled.

“What we are doing in airport staff, is doing– is going out on our runway systems and actually testing the conditions of the runway. Everything that we get, as a result of those tests we inform the FAA, as well as inform the airlines…”

While the city prepared for a wintry mix, some were still surprised to wake up to snow falling from the sky.

“We do the best we can, and we do have the chemicals, the salts– everything we can try to do to mediate the problems the best we can. And again, our biggest concern is the safety of everyone…” Smith said.

The airport will remain open, but for now, only flights scheduled for 5 or after will take off, and airport staff say that’s because safety is top priority.

“Look at the runway system as a road, on the highway, it’s still an element that we have to take under strong consideration for the safety of our passengers…” Smith said.

Before you leave home, Smith says it’s best to check your flight status with your airline.

“That is the quickest and most accurate information,” Smith said.

Smith also says you can call your airline’s 1-800 number or check their website for the latest on flight status. Count on NewsChannel 6 to keep you updated on any other major delays here.
