URBANA, Ill. (WCIA) — Below freezing temperatures continue, which means the risk of frostbite is here in Illinois.

Experts with Carle Health in Urbana said they see a couple cases of frostbite each year. The emergency medical director said if you have frostbite, you may experience a change in skin color, tingling and a lot of pain.

He also said they tend to see a trend with the cases coming into the emergency room.

“So, older people if they were out in the snow or out in the cold, would be at higher risk,” said Emergency Medical Director Ben Davis. “However, it tends to be that it’s the younger people who are the ones out in the snow and the ones who tend to not be prepared.”

He also said people should limit the exposure of skin with layers, hats and gloves. Davis said if you do get frostbite, go inside, warm up and use warm water instead of hot to get your blood flowing.
