URBANA, Ill. (WCIA) — The race for Urbana Mayor is on. On Sunday, the two democratic candidates, DeShawn Williams and Annie Adams, faced off in front of a packed room of community members.

Not a single chair was empty at the mayoral candidate forum at St. Matthews Church. Standing room even became limited as people filed into the church.

The candidates each had a chance to start with an opening statement. Then, it was on to the 60 questions submitted through an online forum.

Williams and Adams went back and forth talking about funding plans, city services, youth engagement and more.

“What I’m most interested in is creating a safe, connected and affordable Urbana, and I want to make sure everybody feels like they are welcomed and that everybody can come to Urbana,” Adams said.

They both said Urbana should be inclusive and inviting to all.

“The community engagement piece, ensuring that we are everything for everybody and ensure that we aren’t leaving anyone behind — that’s one of the focuses and primary goals we’ve kicked off from the very beginning of this campaign,” Williams added.

The forum lasted about an hour with each candidate giving a closing statement to finish things off.

Urbana’s primary elections will be on Feb. 25.
