CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — Researchers say by this time of the year around 80% of people have already quit their new year’s resolutions. So, how can you break through this barrier?

Travis Davis owns the Improve Your Move Fitness gym in Champaign. He recommends starting with goals you can achieve in three to six months and pairing those with a long-term plan as well. Another tip he tells people who have never gone to a gym is to hire a trainer. They’ll be able to make sure you’re doing exercises correctly, so you can avoid injury and reap the benefits.

“A lot of people are hesitant to make goals in the gym for a couple of reasons. They may not know what to do to get to that goal,” Davis said. “They may be kind of scared of the equipment or are just like the gym setting. So that can be a hurdle to overcome as well. I would say when it comes to getting in here and everything, you just want to take the first step and get in there and get active. Sometimes it’s just about showing up to the gym that will help you.”

And if you’ve already gone back on your goal for the year, Davis said it’s okay. You can get back into the gym at any time, and the most important thing is doing it consistently.
