SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WCIA) — The Springfield Fire Department is investigating after a fire destroyed a vacant home on Monday.

The fire happened in the area of Rafter and 4th Streets. Springfield Fire Chief Ed Canny told WCIA units were dispatched at 7:12 a.m. and they arrived to find heavy fire coming from all sides of the home. A man waiting outside told firefighters that no one was inside the home; Canny said the man typically stayed on the front porch.

Firefighters were stretching out hose lines and preparing for an attack when part of the roof collapsed, Canny said. They adopted a defensive stance, fighting the fire from outside the home and protecting another home that was just 10 feet away. It took two hours to extinguish the fire and firefighters remained on the scene until about 10:45 a.m.

No one was hurt, Canny said, but the house was deemed a total loss. Springfield fire officials are still investigating the cause.
