UPDATE 8:08 PM: Jackson Academy has released the following statement:

“Jackson Academy is working closely with law enforcement officials to ensure that all aspects of the incident are thoroughly examined and that appropriate actions are taken,” a statement on Facebook said. “Our priority is to support the investigation in any way possible and to provide all necessary information to the authorities. The safety and well-being of our students, faculty and staff, as well as that of the public, are of the utmost importance to us.

“Counselors and pastors will be on our campus for students affected by the incident. Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected by this incident. The administration and board request your prayers as we navigate through this difficult time.”

UPDATE 12:45 PM: Police say an 18-year-old is being charged with attempted murder after a stabbing at a basketball game. Police Chief Jerry Taylor says it happened at Jackson Academy and that Drayton Kelly was arrested. He says the suspect was a student at Jackson Academy and the victim was not. He says the suspect assaulted a 16-year-old.

The victim had a puncture wound on his neck and was taken to a hospital for treatment.

The chief says the victim is in stable condition and is expected to recover. He says they’re still investigating what led up to this incident.

ORIGINAL STORY: CLARKE COUNTY, Ala (WKRG) – A male teenager had his throat slashed during an alleged attack by another male teenager during a Jackson Academy basketball game Friday night, January 10, according to a school official.

The male teenager was reportedly assaulted by another male teenager, who does not attend Jackson Academy, according to witnesses and alumni. Witnesses say that the victim was grabbed by his alleged attacker in the Jackson Academy basketball gymnasium.

It is believed the altercation was over a female.

The victim has been taken to a nearby hospital where their condition is unknown.

We have reached out to the Jackson Police Department and are waiting for a response.
