Jessica Simpson broke the news about her divorce from Eric Johnson on Jan. 14, 2025. “Eric and I have been living separately navigating a painful situation in our marriage,” Simpson stated to People. “Our children come first, and we are focusing on what is best for them. We are grateful for all of the love and support that has been coming our way, and appreciate privacy right now as we work through this as a family.”

This announcement didn’t shock fans. Insiders told People in November 2024 that Simpson and Johnson were experiencing a serious rift.

“She’s working on music and splits her time between Los Angeles and Nashville. Eric spends all of his time in L.A., where the kids go to school,” the source claimed. “Jess and Eric very much live separate lives.”

In December 2024, a source told Life & Style that Simpson didn’t want to divorce Johnson but felt she was running out of options. “Her divorce from Nick [Lachey] was beyond tough, and there were no kids involved, so she knows this will be 10 times worse,” the source alleged.

The insider added that Kim Kardashian became “front and center” in her life to help her through her split. “[Kardashian] really stepped up to be there as someone to talk things through with,” they continued. “She’s been brutally honest about how painful it was for her to separate her family, but at the end of the day, she does feel divorce was the right option, so she’s giving Jessica hope that if she does go down that path there can be a light at the end of the tunnel.”

Kim Kardashian and Jessica Simpson might have their kids to thank for their friendship. In June 2024, Kardashian and Simpson reportedly had a play date for their daughters, North West, 11, and Maxwell Drew Johnson, 12. The famous friends were out in New York to celebrate North’s birthday.

While Kardashian and Simpson reportedly live near each other and have daughters who are best friends, a source told Life & Style that Simpson had trouble establishing a close relationship with Kardashian.

“Jessica lives in the same neighborhood as Kim, and at one point they were starting to get really friendly, but she was hoping it would go a lot further than it has,” the source alleged. “She feels like she really hasn’t been let into the circle, and it’s kind of frustrating for her since she’s tried so hard.”

Perhaps Simpson’s divorce allowed for her and Kardashian to grow their friendship.

Several insiders alleged why Jessica Simpson and Eric Johnson couldn’t make their marriage work. A source told Page Six that the couple had “trust issues” they couldn’t get past.

“Jess and Eric had trust issues,” the source alleged. “They were no longer on the same page, and it drove a wedge between them.”

The source added that the couple started living separately last year “as a trial” — and Simpson enjoyed life without her husband. “Jess thought it would help if they spent some time apart,” the insider continued, “but it only made her realize she enjoyed her independence.” While the singer has “good and bad days” due to the split, overall, she’s reportedly “handling the separation well, all things considered.”
