Authorities are warning of an increased crocodile and shark risk after 10 melon-headed whales washed ashore in Western Australia.

Park and wildlife officers found seven more whales yesterday after three were first reported in Crab Creek near Broome in the Kimberley on Monday.

The whales were found on the beach and also in mangroves and creeks.

“Biological samples were taken from three of these carcasses for testing,” WA Parks and Wildlife Service said.

“Carcasses located in creeks and mangroves that are inaccessible will remain in situ and left to decompose naturally.”

A shark alert has been issued as swimmers are urged to avoid the waters in the area.

“There is an increased shark and crocodile risk for the area and people are urged to avoid the area for their safety,” WA Parks and Wildlife Service said. 

Crab Creek Road remains closed as officers continue to surveil the shores for any more carcasses.
