DECATUR, Ill. (WCIA) — Decatur is receiving a large gift in the new year in the form of $9.9 million.
The money is coming from the U.S. Department of Transportation, and now the city will use it to add a micro-transit system on Jasper St. This system will operate similar to Uber, but instead of using a private service, users can go on an app connected to the city and order rides there.
“The micro-transit component, so that’s transit operations, on demand transit, as well as a street enhancement along about three and a half miles of the Jasper St. corridor,” said Lacie Elzy, City of Decatur Director of Transportation Services. “It’s always great when hard work goes noticed at the upper levels of government and people believe in your plan. We are so excited to roll this out and have better transportation solutions for our city.”
The money will also reduce lanes on Jasper St. and add lighting and bus shelters with benches.
