A man accused of fatally shooting Prince, a 13-year-old boy from Jacksonville, wants to be tried separately from the man accused of driving in the shooting.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A man accused of fatally shooting a Jacksonville 13-year-old in December 2022 while the teen was on his way home from football tryouts, wants to be tried separately from the man accused of driving in the gang-related shooting.

Kentrevious Garard, 27, was scheduled to appear in Duval County court on Tuesday for a motion hearing ahead of his trial — a trial he wants to be separated from co-defendant Marcel Johnson. They are both set to appear in court for the motion hearing Wednesday morning.

Investigators say Johnson, 24, drove a car, while Garard fired shots from it at an SUV at the intersection of Moncrief Road and New Kings Road, killing 13-year-old Prince Holland on Dec. 3, 2022. Four other people were in the vehicle Prince was in when it was shot up: a 20-year-old man who was critically injured, an 11-year-old who was injured, and a 14-year-old and 15-year-old who were uninjured.

Jacksonville Sheriff T.K. Waters said the drive-by was targeted and pre-planned.

“This shooting was a culmination of escalating violence between two rival street groups,” Jacksonville Sheriff T.K. Waters said at a press conference announcing Johnson’s arrest.

Waters said the gangs are called “3” and “320.” Typically, police do not release the names of gangs or refer to them with those names, but Waters said he wanted the community to know who they are.

Johnson and Garard are both charged with murder, four counts of attempted murder and shooting/throwing deadly missiles in connection to the fatal shooting. They have both pleaded not guilty to the charges.

As it currently stands, jury selection in the murder trial for Johnson and Garard is set for Jan. 27, according to court records.
