LA-area wildfires: Private crews, inmates fighting the flames

() Malibu Mayor Doug Stewart on Facebook debunked a false claim that the city is giving out expedited re-entry permits into evacuation zones as wildfires continue blazing in southern California.

At least 25 people have died in the fires that started last week, according to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner. Red flag warnings were issued by the National Weather Service because high winds are expected to cause extreme fire weather.

About 88,000 people are under evacuation orders because of the fires.

“I want to assure you that city staff have been working around the clock alongside our partners to respond to this historic and unprecedented event,” Stewart said in a letter to Malibu residents.

This work includes inspecting infrastructure, clearing streets of debris, assisting with damage assessments and stabilizing the area to pave the way for safe re-entry and rebuilding, Stewart said.

“We ask for your patience and understanding as our teams along with law enforcement, fire crews, and utility providers continue this vital work,” Stewart said.

While some residents have hired private contractors who requested access to the evacuation zones, Stewart said they are not permitted to go in them at this time.

“We urge all residents to adhere to the evacuation orders for their safety and the safety of the crews working in these areas,” he said. “To our residents, I want to acknowledge the frustration and hardship you are experiencing. Many of you are understandably anxious to return to your homes. We hear you, and we are doing everything in our power to make that happen as quickly and safely as possible.”
