MOUNTAIN CITY, Tenn. (WJHL) — Authorities are investigating a Wednesday night officer-involved shooting in Mountain City that left one person dead and a K-9 injured.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) reports that deputies from the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office and the Carter County Sheriff’s Office responded to a home on the 300 block of Cross Mountain Road just before 10:30 p.m.

Deputies were attempting to execute a search warrant in connection to an investigation involving Alexander James Russom, the TBI stated.

Preliminary information concluded that Russom, 39, fired shots at deputies, the TBI reported.

Deputies then returned fire and hit Russom.

Russom was taken to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead, according to the TBI.

A Johnson County K-9 was also reportedly shot in the incident and taken to a veterinary emergency clinic for treatment.

“TBI agents are working to independently determine the series of events leading to the shooting, including collecting evidence and conducting interviews,” the TBI stated. “Throughout the process, investigative findings will be shared with the District Attorney General for his further review and consideration. The TBI acts solely as fact-finders in its cases and does not determine whether the actions of an officer were justified in these types of matters. That decision rests with the District Attorney General requesting TBI’s involvement.”
